Cotswold Doors is a family-owned business located in Fairford near Cirencester.  We are a leading supplier of internal timber, fire rated doorsets, screens and ironmongery to blue chip construction companies across the UK. We manufacture about 800 doorsets and employ 65 people.

 

We have a relaxed and friendly work environment, focused on delivering excellence and continually improving what we do.

The opportunity

 

This internship is focused on improving Cotswold Doors Management critical processes and business systems.  We plan to go through a large Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) transformation and require digital expertise to join the team to assist with the integration. We are looking for someone who is able to work in a team alongside our IT partner.  The individual needs to be proactive and engaging to benefit from the placement. They need to be prepared to understand what needs to be done and deliver as required.  You must have a good understand of how business and process work and able to grasp digital integration, coding and software management activities.

 

Main Responsibilities:

 

  • Reviewing and preparing processes and data to be integrated into the ERP

  • Updating excel template sheets for automation with ERP

  • Data integration

  • System testing

  • Testing reporting function

  • Mobilising the system

  • Assisting senior leaders embed and refine the system

These tasks will be tailored to the intern’s strengths and the business needs.

  • This internship would be particularly well suited to students studying degrees such as:

  • Computer Science

  • Data Science

  • Software Engineering

  • Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Manufacturing)

  • Business management

Anticipated outcomes:

  • Review internal systems and improve template input documents

  • Assist with the digital transformation of an ERP system

  • Mobilisation of the ERP

  • Management reporting from the ERP

These deliverables may vary depending on project scope but will be shaped collaboratively between the intern, company mentor, and UWE supervisor to ensure a meaningful and achievable outcome.

As part of the Made Smarter internship, you’ll have the opportunity to work a digital transformation project applying your knowledge and skills to a real life business.  Through this process we expect you to learn process and techniques for successful transformation projects, learn how to drive a project forward and understand the challenges and opportunities of working in a small business. 

 

During the internship, you will benefit from:

  • Hands-on experience applying digital tools and techniques in a live business context

  • Mentoring and supervision from experienced staff with regular check-ins and feedback

  • The chance to develop transferable skills including project management, communication, and collaboration

Networking opportunities with industry professionals and potential references

​Pre-Internship Alignment: The host company, academic mentor (25hrs allocation for the duration of the internship) and selected student will meet before the internship begins to align on the role and responsibilities. This provides an opportunity for the student to shape part of the project, understand expectations clearly, and collaborate closely with the team from the outset.

Who can apply?

Internships are open to second and third year UWE undergraduates, UWE Masters students at any stage of their course, postgraduate UWE students and recent UWE graduates.    

 

Working hours and wages

 

This Internship will run for up to 250 hours (exact number of hours to be determined by the business) across the 2025/26 Academic year.

It is recommended that you work a maximum of 12-15 hours a week term time. It may be possible to work additional hours during the holiday periods.

 

If appointed, you will need to discuss your timetable and other commitments with the supervisor and your employer to create a working agreement between you to outline expectations. 

You will be employed by Extracellular and will receive the Real Living Wage of £12.60 per hour, plus holiday entitlement. As an employee you'll be expected to follow the business' employee standards of timekeeping, work ethics and culture.  

 

This internship is based at Unit 1, Whelford Industrial Estate, Whelford Rd, Fairford GL7 4DT. Please note that access to a car is required for transportation. Travel expenses will be covered as part of this internship.
