Become a Skills Bootcamp Industry Mentor

What is an Industry Mentor?

Our mentors support learners by providing guidance and sharing experiences and knowledge from any area of their expertise and career journey.

It’s a two-way street in that, mentees will learn from a mentor's wealth of experience, but it's also an amazing opportunity for mentors to develop personally and professionally.

As one of our mentors you will help the learner gain the confidence they need to enter into a new career by helping them to;

  • Map their next steps in their chosen career path

  • Identify key skills needed for potential job opportunities

  • Build confidence in their new and existing skills

  • Empower the learner with their own personal development.

What does a UWE mentor do?

Collaborating at Work

Gain a lot from giving a little

Dedicating just 3-6 hours in total, over a period of 6-12 weeks could be surprisingly rewarding.

We ask our mentors to facilitate an agreed number of sessions (usually between 3 – 6) over a set period of time (usually 6 – 12 weeks) with their assigned mentee. The number of sessions and duration will be based on our Skills Bootcamp structure and duration.

Your mentoring sessions can be held online or in person, whichever you and your mentee prefer. The structure of these sessions will be up to you as the mentor, but you may consider discussion around some of the following areas:

  • Providing feedback on work they develop as part of their Skills Bootcamp portfolio

  • Providing a perspective on the industry and give exposure to best practice

  • Introducing them to a role or other suitable roles to understand the industry further

  • Providing a networking experience to mentees

  • Highlighting opportunities or guiding them in where to find them

We do not require our mentors to have any previous mentoring experience, just industry experience in the Skills Bootcamp subject. As part of your introduction to the scheme you will be invited to our Developing your mentoring skills workshop which provides tools and techniques you can use in your sessions and our Skills Bootcamp Team will always be on hand to help you.

What will you gain from becoming a mentor?

Mentoring can be hugely rewarding and not only equip you with new skills, but also provide you with insight from those looking to enter your industry and an opportunity for you to learn from their experiences.

Our mentoring scheme will also give you the opportunity to:
