Extracellular is a Bristol based start-up aiming to be a global leader in sustainable biotechnology. We're channelling expertise in biology, digitalisation and biomanufacturing to accelerate sustainable and ethical novel food, materials and cosmetics products using animal and plant cell culture technologies.

The opportunity

 

We’re looking for a flexible digital/technology intern to join Extracellular’s digital team, working under the Senior Systems Engineer to design, build, and maintain systems that maximize efficiency across the business.

 

Your work will cover internal tools, software integrations, and close collaboration with scientists and stakeholders to deliver value through technology.

 

You’ll work on projects within the team’s roadmap, researching and implementing reliable, scalable solutions.

 

You will need to have initiative to research and design your own solutions and have a drive to continuously learn about new technologies and how they can be applied to our business to provide value to our scientists and our clients.

Desired Skills:

 

  • Experience or interest in developing, configuring, or integrating digital tools or software systems (i.e. Python/Golang).

  • Adapting third-party systems to business needs, eg. Inventory, HR, ELN, MES.

  • Problem-solving with initiative and operational focus.

  • Ability to learn new tools or technologies to address business challenges, eg. DevOps, Cloud.

  • Communicating with team members with a different technical and scientific backgrounds; scientists, process engineers.

  • Interest in DevOps and Security is beneficial
     

Note: Specific degree titles are less important than showing you have the right mindset and skills. If you have a broad skillset across digital/technology projects and your own digital projects to show, then please consider applying.

Anticipated outcomes:

·       Support integration or improvement of business systems

·       Contribute to and implement a proof-of-concept projects for internal tools or processes

·       Depending on applicant skills; assist with digital infrastructure, security, or other technology initiatives (This could involve setting up CI/CD, cloud infrastructure and security infrastructure)

Learning outcomes:

·       Hands-on experience contributing to live business systems

·       Working in a fast-moving team with a wide remit over all things digital and tech.

·       Mentoring from senior staff, with freedom to explore your own solutions

·       Experience a different industry (biotech).

·       Opportunity to shape part of the project and collaborate closely with the team

​Pre-Internship Alignment: The host company, academic mentor (25hrs allocation for the duration of the internship) and selected student will meet before the internship begins to align on the role and responsibilities. This provides an opportunity for the student to shape part of the project, understand expectations clearly, and collaborate closely with the team from the outset.

Who can apply?

Internships are open to second and third year UWE undergraduates, UWE Masters students at any stage of their course, postgraduate UWE students and recent UWE graduates.    

 

Working hours and wages

 

This Internship will run for up to 250 hours (exact number of hours to be determined by the business) across the 2025/26 Academic year.

It is recommended that you work a maximum of 12-15 hours a week term time. It may be possible to work additional hours during the holiday periods. The Internship will need to be completed between 1 September 2025 and 28 February 2026. 

If appointed, you will need to discuss your timetable and other commitments with the supervisor and your employer to create a working agreement between you to outline expectations. 

You will be employed by Extracellular and will receive the Real Living Wage of £12.60 per hour, plus holiday entitlement. As an employee you'll be expected to follow the business' employee standards of timekeeping, work ethics and culture.  

 

This internship is based at Science Creates Old Market, Old Market, Bristol, BS2 0NZ, a centrally located office approximately a 15-minute walk from Temple Meads station and well served by public transport. The role is offered on a hybrid working basis. It is anticipated that attending the office at a minimum of twice per week will be beneficial to the successful applicant’s work and integration with the team.
